Your gut alone hosts 100 trillion of them and until recently we thought that our microbes didn’t matter. This is all set to change as the latest scientific research tells a very different story, one where microbes run our bodies and becoming healthy is impossible without them.

In this ground-breaking book, biologist Alanna Collen reveals how our personal colony of microbes influence our weight, immune system, mental health and even our choice of partner. This is a new way of understanding modern diseases – obesity, autism, mental health problems, gut disorders, allergies, auto-immunity and even cancer – as she argues they have their root in our failure to cherish our most fundamental and enduring relationship: that with our microbes.

Illuminating many of the questions still unanswered by the human genome project 10% Human completely changes our understanding of diet, modern disease and medicine. The good news is that unlike our human cells, we can change our microbes for the better and this book shows you how. A revelatory and indispensable guide: life – and your body – will never seem the same again.

Completely un-put-downable! I have now read many books on the ever-unfolding subject of the gut microbiome but this one is the best. Detailed and comprehensive coverage of much recent research and a super style of writing. I CANNOT recommend this book highly enough; it is simply fascinating.

Should be compulsory reading for all medics! As a retired scientist I found this book a real page turner. The author is to be congratulated on a very readable, up to date and comprehensive account of an extremely important subject, which nevertheless will mean little to most medics who are usually too busy to keep abreast of new developments. The details of the science involved in studying our microbiomes is well supported with references to the journals in which the original research was published. This is easily the best book I have…

Thought provoking! Very clearly written and argues that the microbial balance of your gut affects just about everything you feel or do – including allergies to so many things such as nutsEven alleged to contribute to Autism and other mental health issues. The argument that the modern rapid increase in allergies follows the introduction of Antibiotics in the West around World War 2 certainly fits chronologically – and the fact that such allergies are very rare in the “less developed” (i e. medicated…
